REACH Legislation
What is it?
REACH is new Health and Safety legislation covering any business that uses, imports or manufactures any chemicals.
REACH came into force in June 2007 and aims to reduce many existing European regulations and directives with a single unified legislation.
In the case of REACH “users” also means “sellers” and covers things you might not expect.
- If you sell scented candles you need to comply with REACH because the scent in those candles is a chemical that is released on burning.
- If you buy any chemicals from outside the EU then you are liable for their content and usage
REACH legislation covers all businesses that operate within the European Union plus businesses in Iceland and Switzerland.
Why has REACH legislation been introduced?
REACH legislation has been introduced to reduce CMR chemicals [Carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxicants] and R50/R53 chemicals which are very toxic to aquatic organisms.
What is the REACH legislation target?
REACH legislation is designed to reduce the usage of CMR chemicals and R50/R53 chemicals by up to 25% by 2018.
